After Tuesday night’s SmackDown tapings in Albany, New York, Edge came down and did a “five second pose” with Christian before the entire WWE roster, including Triple H, came down and paid tribute to The Rated R Superstar.

Edge gave a long farewell speech, thanking everyone he could think of. He talked about Kane, Christian, Lita and Vickie Guerrero. Edge was a class act here and the crowd loved the speech, according to a fan in attendance. A “Hall of Fame” chant broke out.

WWE camera crews were filming the speech so it will likely be on their website or a future DVD release.

Christian won a 20-man battle royal at tonight’s WWE SmackDown tapings to earn a shot to face Alberto Del Rio at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view for the World Heavyweight Title. Here’s the updated card:

Ladder Match for the Vacant World Heavyweight Title
Alberto Del Rio vs. Christian

Triple Threat Match for the WWE Title
John Cena vs. R-Truth vs. The Miz

Tag Team Match
Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole and Jack Swagger

Edge is still under contract to WWE and will be working with them later this year to promote his new WWE Studios movie. Everyone expects Edge to remain a part of the WWE family, similar to Shawn Michaels.

Tonight’s SmackDown tapings is his last scheduled appearance for the company for the time being.

Vince McMahon hates Sin Cara’s entrance using the trampoline since he’s messed it up two out of three times he’s performed it at a TV taping. After last night’s RAW, the special Cara may be completely scrapped or altered.

WWE Smackdown (Airing Friday)
Alberto Del Rio comes out and says tonight is about Edge. Del Rio says it is his destiny to win the World Heavyweight Championship but not this week. He says Edge should come out and present him with the belt. Teddy Long comes out and says it won’t be going down like that. Long informs Del Rio he’ll still fight in a Ladder Match at Extreme Rules for the belt but a new number one contender will be determined in a 20-man over-the-top battle royal.

Ezekiel Jackson defeated Kofi Kingston w/The Corre on commentary. After the match, Jackson gets on the mic and says he is the personification of domination and after the battle royal he will be the number one contender and everyone will know including The Corre.

Lay-Cool couples therapy. They bicker and Michelle McCool walks out.

Cody Rhodes has an in-ring promo, saying that he wanted to disfigure Rey Mysterio the way that Cody has disfigured him. Mysterio comes out and they fight. Rey nails the 619 and Cody leave.

They air the promo for the former Awesome Kong.

Rey Mysterio defeated Drew McIntyre after hitting the 619.

Backstage, Edge is getting an ovation from the Smackdown locker room. Edge and Kane shake hands.

Edge comes out and gives a recap of his career. He says he is going to miss all of it. “Thank you” chants fill the arena. Edge says he wants to do his intro one more time. He’s pumped now and talking about how great the WWE doctors are and says he’s taking his girl and going surfing. Edge is happy he got to say goodbye in Albany because it’s the place where he won his first championship. In fact it was in a cab in Albany where Edge came up with the nickname Edge. He introduces his mother who is sitting in the front row and thanks her for all her support. To him his title has meant everything to him but the belt is not his. Edge says every fan holds a piece of it as he relinquishes the belt. Edge says it’s been a heck of a ride concluding another emotional shoot of a speech.

Backstage, Alberto Del Rio interrupts Edge. Del Rio extends his hand but Edge stares him down. Del Rio smiles as Edge walks away.

Kelly Kelly vs. Layla. Layla tries to do their entrance but Michelle McCool goes straight to the ring. Kelly wins via roll-up. McCool comes in the ring and shoves Layla across the ring and leaves.

They air a video package of WWE superstars commenting on The Undertaker vs. Triple H from Wrestlemania.

In the Battle Royal: Big Show, Kane, The Corre, Heath Slater, Jack Swagger, Brodus Clay, Christian, Cody Rhodes, Drew McIntyre, Yoshi Tatsu, Kofi Kingston, Rey Mysterio, Tyler Reks, Chris Masters, Chavo Guerrero, Curt Hawkins, Trent Baretta and JTG.

The final four are Christian, Rey, Swagger and Justin Gabriel. Rey eliminated Gabriel. Swagger eliminated Rey.

Christian won the battle royal to face Alberto Del Rio for the World title at Extreme Rules. Michael Cole interfered in the match and took a 619 to the back from Mysterio.Post-match Edge came to he ring and did a five second pose with Christian.

As noted before, Edge has legitimately retired from WWE due to issues with his neck that haven’t been improving. Edge had been talking about retiring in two years but told someone as recent as a few weeks ago that he felt like he had five more years left.

It’s said that Edge has some writing projects that he will be working on and that he knows what he wants to do with his life and those plans don’t have much to do with wrestling. The feeling is that Edge will always stay affiliated with WWE but won’t be someone you see working full time behind-the-scenes as an agent or something.

Regarding Edge and the World Heavyweight Title, there was some confusion at RAW last night as to why WWE didn’t put Alberto Del Rio over at WrestleMania 27 if they knew there was even a small chance that Edge would be leaving soon.

While WWE’s announcement notes that Edge got his MRI results the Monday after WrestleMania, sources indicate that he’s been feeling more intense pain for a few weeks now but didn’t think he would be forced to retire. Had they known Edge would have to retire, more emphasis would have been put on the WrestleMania match to make it feel more special.

The feeling at RAW last night among some was that John Morrison would have got R-Truth’s spot in the WWE Title Triple Threat at Extreme Rules if it weren’t for the heat on him right now for his actions towards Trish Stratus.

WWE Champion The Miz spoke with The Miami Herald this week. Here are some highlights:

Fans’ reaction to him:
“The fans always cheer me at events like Axxess or the press conferences. Then at live events they boo me, but show me the respect I deserve. They didn’t do that three years ago, when they literally hated me and couldn’t stand me. They changed the channel, when I was on TV. Now I think I’m starting to earn their respect, which is good.”

The Rock:
“The Rock was my favorite growing up. He has always been my favorite. I was able to get in there and upstage him and literally show him that I’m better. It’s like when you see an icon or someone you idolize when you are younger. Then you are in the ring with him and are able to show him up. To show everyone you are better than your idol, there is nothing better than that.”

WrestleMania 28 in Miami:
“I will still be the main event. I plan on still being the WWE champion. I plan on being the longest reigning WWE champion of all time. It’s just the type of person I am. I am always aiming to be number one and the best. So I will be the champion, the main event and everything everyone else isn’t.”

As noted before, Edge will hand over the World Heavyweight Title at tonight’s WWE SmackDown tapings. WWE has removed the World Title Ladder Match from their Extreme Rules line-up.

One idea discussed for tonight’s SmackDown tapings has Edge hand-picking Christian to take his place against Alberto Del Rio in the Ladder Match, which would be for the vacant World Heavyweight Title belt.

There has been talk of putting The Corre in a multi-man match at Extreme Rules with Wade Barrett’s Intercontinental Title on the line and Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater’s Tag Team Titles on the line.

Natalya and Christian have took to Twitter and commented on their friend Edge retiring. Here’s what they wrote:

Natalya: “My thoughts are with Edge, and thank you so much for the wonderful memories. You’re a real, true friend and ill never forget it”

Christian: “I’ve shed my tears..And from here on out I choose 2celebrate 1 of the greatest careers in WWE history..Cant wait2 induct u in the HOF #Edge”

It looks like Awesome Kong is coming to the RAW brand as a vignette aired on tonight’s show before the Divas Title match. The promo showed Kong’s arm and part of her head. She thumped the head off of a blonde baby doll and laughed.

Vince McMahon was said to be furious at Sin Cara’s botched entrance on RAW last week when he attacked Sheamus. When the botch happened on RAW last night, there were guys watching monitors in the back that were joking around that “that was it” for Cara and Primo would probably be fired out of spite.
